The crown has to match the flue tile dimensions, the chimney’s exterior shape, and the local weather load. Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Concrete or stone flakes in the gutter or on the roof. The crown material is breaking down from water absorption and freeze-thaw cycling. Once it starts spalling, the damage accelerates each winter.
• Water staining on the chimney brick just below the crown. The crown is no longer shedding water the way it should. Water is running down the sides instead of off the edge, and the brick is wicking it up.
• Damp spots or musty smell inside the firebox after rain. Water is getting past the crown, into the flue, and down to the firebox. This is the point where the damage moves from the crown to the inside of the house.
• Visible cracks wider than a hairline in the crown surface. Gelco crowns develop stress cracks where the flue tile meets the crown slab. Those cracks open and close with temperature swings, and every cycle lets more water in.
• Rust staining around the flue cap or on the crown surface. If the crown has a metal cap, rust means water is pooling around it. A crown should never hold water; it should move water off in seconds.
