Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Sterling Owner’s Guide

If your Gelco flue liner has cracked, warped, or separated, we stock Gelco-compatible replacement liner sections and install them throughout Sterling. A typical Gelco flue liner replacement runs $900 to $2,300 installed depending on the length, diameter, and whether we’re doing a straight swap or rebuilding the chase top. Most jobs are done in half a day, and we keep the common sizes on the truck, so you’re not waiting two weeks for a part to ship.

The way most Sterling homeowners find out they need this part is through a chimney inspection done before burning season. They noticed a smell, or the damper was sticking, or they saw flakes of metal in the firebox. Then the camera went up and the liner told the truth. The other common path is a failed annual sweep, when the brush catches on a gap or a crack that was too small to see last year. Either way, a Gelco liner does not heal itself. It fails in stages, and the earlier you catch it, the simpler the job.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes rigid stainless steel chimney liner and chase cover systems, and the replacement work applies to their standard round liner sections, tee bodies, and flex-to-rigid connectors. The most common diameters we pull out of Sterling homes are 6-inch and 7-inch, with 5.5-inch showing up on older builders’-grade fireplaces. If you have the original install paperwork, the liner kit number will start with a “GLC” prefix followed by the diameter and length code. If you don’t, the measurement is easy enough: the diameter is stamped on the liner wall, visible once we get it out.

Here’s the thing about OEM versus aftermarket. Gelco’s own liner sections are solid, well-welded stainless, usually 316L alloy on the newer production runs. But a good aftermarket section from HeatShield or DuraFlex will often match or beat the wall thickness for less money. We stock both and will show you the price difference before we order anything. Some original Gelco installations used an odd 5.75-inch diameter that is harder to match without a reducer, so if you have an older fireplace insert, we’ll measure precisely before quoting the job. That detail has caught more than one homeowner off guard.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

  • Flakes of metal in the firebox or on the damper. This is the liner wall corroding from the inside. Once stainless starts flaking, there is a pinhole or a crack behind it, and exhaust gases are finding their way into places they shouldn’t.
  • A smell like a damp campfire between burns. That’s creosote that has soaked into the liner seam or has settled behind a cracked section. A properly intact liner doesn’t hold that smell.
  • Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney or rust streaks on the chase exterior. Water is getting past the liner flash, often where the Gelco section meets the chase top. In Sterling’s freeze-thaw cycles, a small gap turns into a big one over one winter.
  • The damper is hard to move or won’t fully open. A warped liner section can push the flue opening slightly out of alignment, or rust scale from the liner can fall and bind the damper hinge.
  • Your sweep’s brush catches or hangs during an annual cleaning. That’s a physical crack or a joint that has separated. The best thing that can happen is the brush catches it. The worst thing is nobody looks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Sterling, a Gelco-compatible flue liner replacement is priced on liner length, diameter, and access. A standard one-story chimney with a 6-inch liner and straightforward roof access usually falls between $900 and $1,400. Two-story homes, steep pitches, masonry that needs repointing around the top, or an original Gelco flex connector that has corroded at the appliance outlet can push it to $2,300 or beyond. We price the whole job before a single tool comes off the truck, parts and labor in one number. What you hear is what you pay.

Every replacement we install is backed by the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the new liner section does not seat right, or the chimney doesn’t draft the way it should when the weather turns, one call brings Wendell and his crew back at no charge. We also sweep the full flue before the new section goes in, not as a surprise charge, but because you don’t install clean stainless against a dirty chimney. That’s the kind of thing a national outfit will tack on as “recommended cleaning” at the door. Around here it’s just part of the job.

DIY or Call Us?

You can inspect a lot from the ground: visible rust lines on the chase cap, missing fasteners, cracked flashing. You can look into the flue from the firebox with a bright flashlight and see the first few feet of liner. But if you have to get on the roof, especially a two-story Sterling colonial with a pitch that makes you lean funny, that’s where we’d tell you to stop and call. Getting a section of 30-foot stainless down a chimney takes two people, the right rigging, and a good sense of how not to launch a brush off a roof. Wendell has been doing this since 1999, and he’s still humbled by the occasional chimney that fights back. If the liner is cracked, call (571) 518-5470. We’ll come out, show you the camera footage, and tell you plain whether it needs replacing this year or can wait.
